<i>Operando</i> Studies of Iodine Species in an Advanced Oxidative Water Treatment Reactor

We present an electrochemical advanced oxidation process (eAOP) reactor employing expanded graphite, potassium iodide (KI), and electrical current, which demonstrates exceptionally high rate of inactivation Escherichia coli (106 or 6 log10 reduction in viable cells) at a low current density (0.12 mA/cm2), with short contact time (5 min) concentration KI (10 ppm, 0.06 mM). Advanced spectroscopic methods were used to study the during operation. Operando X-ray fluorescence mapping is show distribution iodine species reactor, operando absorption spectroscopy anodic chamber reveals effective state higher than IO4–. measurements confirm that conditions chambers are favorable for creation highly oxidized products. The killing efficiency this new eAOP far exceeds expected from either traditional iodine-based water treatment systems alone, phenomenon may be associated production reported here.
